Betts Law Company Privacy Policy

This document sets out the way in which Betts Law Company (we, us) collects, uses, stores and discloses personal information in accordance with our obligations under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), including the Australian Privacy Principles.

Privacy Act means the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) including the Australian Privacy Principles (as amended from time to time).

Services means the legal and related services that we provide.

What Personal Information do we collect and why?

However, in some matters, we may need to disclose Personal Information overseas - for example, where your matter involves foreign jurisdictions, transactions with an international element or where we need advice from overseas counsel or experts. You will be informed if this applies to you.
Overseas recipients may not be subject to the Australian Privacy Principles or equivalent laws on legal professional privilege. In some circumstances, foreign laws could compel disclosure of your information.
If you consent to us disclosing Personal Information overseas in these situations, you acknowledge that we may not take steps to ensure the overseas recipient complies with Australian privacy laws, and you may not be able to seek redress under the Privacy Act.

Sending information electronically

When you send us information by email or through our Website, that information (including Personal Information) may be stored on our systems in line with our policies.
While we take reasonable steps to protect Personal Information, no data transmission over the internet is fully secure. Sending information to us electronically is at your own risk.
If you access other websites via our Website, your Personal Information will be handled according to that website's policies.
We recommend you take steps to protect your own information, including:

How we protect and retain your Personal Information

If you apply for a position with us, we will collect Personal Information such as your contact details and CV, and we may collect Sensitive Information (e.g. about prior criminal convictions) where relevant.
We may collect this information directly or from third parties (such as referees or recruitment agencies) or publicly available sources. We will only use it:

to create an employment relationship with you if successful;
or as otherwise permitted by law.

Updating or correcting your Personal Information

If you believe we have breached the Australian Privacy Principles, please contact our Privacy Officer first. If we cannot resolve your complaint, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.
